Policies

The EU and Japan have a joint commitment to promote trusted, sustainable and rules-based connectivity that brings lasting benefits, and creates sustainable and inclusive growth in partner countries. Tangible cooperation offers will continuously be made.

The EU and Japan will also continue to jointly activate their private sector expertise and investment capacity and further enhance collaboration between their finance institutions.

The projects are embedded in larger initiatives:

The EU Global Gateway, which was adopted on 1 December 2021, has brought a renewed focus on the EU’s commitments to deliver on the connectivity agenda. It is based on the principles of good governance and of green ambition. It will support the deployment of secure and sustainable quality infrastructures, fostering the resilience of global supply chains, and strengthening the decision-making autonomy of the EU's partners. Besides traditional actors such as civil society organizations, this time private businesses have also been invited. Under the Global Gateway, the EU will work closely with Japan, a key partner.

Team Europe: Scale is needed to create a transformative impact; through the Team Europe approach the EU countries will team up to complement each other’s initiatives and funds, reaching scale and impact through common work.

Strategies for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region: For Japan, the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) aims to realize prosperity for the entire region through the promotion and establishment of the rule of law, freedom of navigation, free trade as well as the pursuit of economic prosperity, security and peace. The Japanese Development Cooperation Charter is very important in this.

The G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Development, in which Japan and the EU play key roles in promoting quality infrastructure investment in collaboration with other countries and international organizations, as well as the G20 Principles for Quality Infrastructure Investment.
