The Partnership on Sustainable Connectivity and Quality Infrastructure between the European Union and Japan

This is a value-based partnership concluded by EU and Japan in 2019. It is a try to build a democratic alternative to other initiatives. In it both parts express their intent to work together on all dimensions of connectivity, bilaterally and multilaterally. The Partnership is based on sustainability as a shared value, quality infrastructure and their belief in the benefits of a level playing field. It includes cooperation in digital, transport, energy and people-to-people exchanges. The EU and Japan endeavour to ensure synergies and complementarity between their respective cooperation on connectivity and quality infrastructure with partner countries. It will be a tool to create more coordinated actions, notably in the regions of the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Indo-Pacific, as well as in Africa. They will fully take into account third partners’ needs and demands and pay utmost attention to their fiscal capacity and debt-sustainability.
